The true color behind Oxford

I have to admit that the word “Oxford” conjured specific and memorable images in my mind (these include that it was a private school and that it was a close door campus with all its colleges together, sort of as the campus at Yale or Harvard), but now, having actually visited, what clings most to my imagination is that the actual format of the school is not concentrated in an area, instead it is spread out as a student town compose of different colleges in between shops, pubs, etc. It's school color is dark blue and it is mostly associated with the popular sports. It is also a public school in which the only way to determine one entrance is through the A level exam. Oxford is a university with a long history dating back to the 1200s and this history is shown in its architecture and statues around the school.
