Breaking Away From Royal Tradition

On May 19, 2018 Prince Harry and his lover Meghan Markle tied the knot at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. People from all over the world gathered in the hot sun, pushing their way through the thousand others trying to witness this beautiful moment. The wedding was spectacular with the upmost elegance. With the extravagant decor, perfectly woven dresses, and the elite guest list, this wedding was surely one to talk about. Although the idea of a royal wedding is exciting for anyone, this most recent wedding held more significance as she helps veer away from royal tradition.

Being that Markle is the first biracial, American to ever marry into the royal family, there was a lot of controversy over Prince Harry's decision to marry her. The public doubted her as her past and descent do not fit pervious customs. However, the public view of her changed as her wedding day came closer. She proved to the world that she is going to use her new position in royalty as a way to provoke change within society which helped her gain support from the people.

Welcoming an African American woman into monarchy will give people of color and many others hope against the intolerance present in both the United States and Britain. Britain is a multicultural society meaning it supports a variety of different cultural groups working side by side each other rather than together. With multiculturalism at work, it suggests separateness which causes many problems as people experience identity confusion and do not feel as one. In the United States, the issue of race is always present as there is constant controversy over the mistreatment of people of color. In addition to racial equality, Markle is also a huge advocate for women's rights and does a lot of work to encourage gender equality which is also a big attraction to the public. By bringing Markle into the royal family, it will hopefully encourage individuals from both countries to take on issues of social injustice and create more acceptance overall as she further proves that a woman of color is capable of holding big roles in society.

Although Markle goes against much of the royal tradition, her presence in monarchy seems to be a positive one and I am delighted I got to see her official welcome into the royal family. Despite the long trek there and the sore feet afterwards, my experience at Windsor was nothing less than amazing. It was exciting to witness history and it gave me a better understanding of British culture. Cheers to the happy couple!
