Amante Double: Twin Fetish Thriller

Resembling Fifty Shades of Grey, this thriller provides you with all the parts that Fifty Shades didn't. Amant Double is a psychosexual melodrama that is hard to take seriously. Opening up the film with a vagina shot, unsure as to what I just witnessed already brings up tons of questions on the seriousness of the movie. Ranging from the split mirrored scenes to the raunchy scenes between the lovers.

Ex-model Chloe, who complains of stomach aches, starts to seek help from a shrink where she met Dr. Paul Meyer. However, after a couple sessions he admits his feelings for Chloe and their relationship unravels. Although she has been so expressive about her own anxieties, she knows little about Paul's past, which starts to stir up her curiosity. The film spirals off into the realm of improbable, including Paul's twin, Louis, who is sadistic and cruel. However I soon realized that the film was turning into a gothic horror story. But the whole movie was based off of Joyce Carol Oates novel Lives of the Twins. At first I thought the fault lied within the evilness that surrounded the evil male twins, but in reality it was within the Chloe herself.

Through this film, you can tell how different European and American films are. Specifically with this film it had more sensuality and nudity, yet it wasn't used as a device for shock, but art and aesthetics, whereas American films tend to have sex and nudity more for shocking and gratuitous reasons. European films also focus more on dialogue and the meaning behind their actions, ranging from body language to the split mirrored screen in the beginning of the film between Chloe and Paul's first sessions together. American films are too focused on action. Even the theater, Institut Francais, was a different ambiance compared to American theaters. You didn't see everyone munching on popcorn, but instead sipped on wine or just drank water. The seats were also very luxerious and it felt more fancy being inside. You can easily tell how much these people value theater or films. It is shown in everything, everyone was dressed nice also. The end of the film left me wanting to keep watching, but it was an open book for many interpretations. There was never a dull moment where I got bored, but simply kept me on the edge of my seat.

All in all this has been one of my top movies to see, I was able to savor the art in all forms.
