One bit of advice--try not to let the 1st person/diary voice dominate ALL your writing. The first person or "I" is a tricky rhetorical tool to use. Use a little of it strategically, and you make your writing more powerful. Use it every sentence and the even the hint of objectivity (which you should strive for as an interloping cultural anthropologist) disappears.
